Affirmations Don’t Work!

Affirmations don’t work. If they did, we wouldn’t be conversing on how to get out of — or into — situations we want to happen. Repeating an affirmative slogan to gain anything is still more of the same noise within, but with a positive spin.

Affirmations don’t work. If they did, there would be no disease, heartache, homelessness, war, or hunger. The idea that repeating a mantra for either spiritual or material gain still comes from a belief that something is wrong, that life isn’t working, and that things are just not right. So we believe that thinking it away with positive, affirmative words will erase the writing on the wall that our life sucks.

My 8-year-old niece, Rey, and I were walking back from the beach one afternoon, and suddenly, she began to tell me about “opposite land” — a place where everything was the opposite of what we see. She liked the opposite land because her imagination soared. She told me she could imagine something different from what was happening. Rey saw beyond appearances; she was childlike in her perception. And that’s what we’re asked to do as adults.

We must see, not by our judgment of what we see or by our limited point of view of how we see it, but by asking the Spirit to interpret the real meaning of what we see — the truth that lines the form and formless. As we walk up the ladder of life, rising in consciousness, we have to take a position that is not of this world. We have to live in the land of opposites, see beyond what we think we see, and ask that truth be revealed beyond…
